‘Builder asked us to sell the flats if we are unhappy’ Residents have no access to the clubhouse Bangalore: Simmering discontent over unmet commitments on the part of the builder boiled over with some 120 residents of Akme Ballet, a deluxe apartment complex on the Outer Ring Road near Doddanakundi, holding a protest demonstration in front of the regional office of Akme Projects Ltd. in Indiranagar on Saturday. Residents said they were tired of complaining to The Anil Nanda Group, owners of Akme Projects Ltd. and builder of Akme Ballet, about a multitude of facilities they were promised but did not receive even after paying between Rs. 60 lakh and Rs. 70 lakh for each flat. “Whenever we have complained, the builder told us to sell our flats if we were unhappy,” said members of the Akme Ballet Owners and Dwellers’ Association (ABODE). With a memorandum that lists issues such as the unavailability of a functional effluent disposal system, a water-logged basement and the complete handover of apartment among 23 other problems, residents are hoping that the builder will take remedial steps. “We paid Rs. 1 lakh for a clubhouse without which they were not willing to sell us the flats. Now we are denied access to this clubhouse because the builder has not sorted out his legal problems with the operators of the clubhouse,” said ABODE president S. Ravi. The residents alleged that some of them were threatened and manhandled by the builder’s employees when they complained about these issues earlier. Even the promise of fully completed flats being handed to them in June or July 2007 has still not been fulfilled. When contacted, Subbaraman, South India Head of Akme Projects Ltd., said: “We will look into residents’ memorandum and see what we can do.”
