Bid to disrupt working of Brahmapuram plant

Staff Reporter

Police authorities alerted, says Mayor

Talks on for Refuse-Derived Fuel plant

Rs. 20-crore projects approved

KOCHI: Police authorities have been alerted to attempts at disrupting the functioning of the solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram, said Mayor Mercy Williams here on Saturday. She was responding to questions on the issue by Deputy Mayor C.K. Manisankar during the council meeting held to approve projects under People’s Planning Scheme for 2008-’09.

Mr. Manisankar said there had been attempts to block the water outlet from the plant. Participating in the discussion, N. Venugopal said that protests against the plant had been there earlier also, but the civic body had not sought police intervention.

It was also suggested during the discussions that the obstructions were being made ahead of the visit to the plant by the Ombudsman for Local Bodies. Recently, Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy had visited the plant and suggested improvement of facilities there.

Ms. Williams told the council that discussions were on for establishing the proposed Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) plant.

With an expected installed capacity to process 250 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste and convert it to 225 lakh fuel pellets to be used in cement factories and boilers, the RDF plant is being highlighted as a solution to the piling up of non-biodegradable waste in the city.

Participating in another discussion, Ms. Williams said that no abattoir could be constructed at Mattanchery under the existing norms. A centralised slaughter house was being considered at Brahmapuram.

She also said that the slaughter house at Kaloor, construction of which has been completed, would soon become fully operational.

The council approved projects worth Rs. 20 crore to be taken up under the People’s Plan Scheme during the 2008-’09 financial year. The proposal will now be sent to the District Planning Committee for ratification.
