NEW DELHI: Perhaps for the first time in the history of the Delhi University Students’ Union elections, a male student from the Sikh community is being fielded as a candidate for one of the four office bearers in the central panel. The Indian National Students’ Organisation has zeroed in on Gagandeep Singh who is in the race for the post of secretary. Introducing its candidates for the central panel, INSO working president Kapoor Chaudhary said Gagandeep, who is a third year student at Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Science, was elected unopposed as the president of his college. However, he decided to forego that post to contest at the University level. Most articulate and confident of the four, Gagandeep spoke on the lack of promotion to sports in the University. The INSO presidential candidate Vikas said more hostels should be constructed for outstation students. Yashwant Saroha who is in the fray for the post of vice-president spoke on re-starting U-special buses in the National Capital Region, while Sonam Rawat (joint secretary) said ensuring safety for the girl students was her top priority. Barring Gagandeep, all the others are first-year students. “It is a misconception that the first-year students are weak candidates. The fact is that in the first year only, you get to face the maximum number of problems as a newcomer. So, we will me more connected with the issues of the students,” said Sonam.
