HYDERABAD: The government’s aim is to develop more sea ports on the State’s 1,000-km coastline and to see that special economic zones are created to facilitate more international trade, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said here on Saturday.

Inaugurating a national seminar on ‘Railways as a logistic provider in the transport sector,’ organised by the Centre for Transportation Research and Management, he said the Gangavaram Port would be inaugurated in a month’s time.

Works on four other major ports -- Vodarevu, Nizampatnam, Machilipatnam and Bhavanipuram - would begin soon. For these ports to become operational, it was absolutely essential that they were provided proper connectivity.

In this regard, he expressed confidence that the railways would stand up to the challenge.

Stress on quality

Dr. Reddy stressed the importance of doing quality work in the manufacturing sector which accounted for 70 per cent of the world trade. “If we fail to maintain efficiency and quality in the sector, we will not be able to live up to the global standards.”

He noted that the railways had an ambitious programme of providing logistic support to the infrastructure sector in the State, which was growing phenomenally.

“In the context of rising fuel costs in the transportation sector, the role of railways becomes all the more important,” he observed.

V.N. Mathur, Member (Traffic), Railway Board, H.K. Padhee, General Manager, South Central Railway, J. N. Jagannath, Chief Operations Manager, and M. Sundar Ram, Chief Freight Traffic Manager, spoke.
