Credit card fraud detected, one held
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: Central Crime Branch personnel of Chennai Suburban Police Commissionerate on Friday arrested a 35-year-old man on charges of making fake credit cards and using them in shopping malls to purchase jewellery and expensive articles.
Police said Kannaiah of Urapakkam was arrested earlier this year in connection with theft of mobile phones and other crime cases in Virugambakkam and Valasarawakkam police station limits and was released from prison about a month ago.
Detailing the method of operation, police said after preparing the fake cards, Kannaiah and another person, reported to be the mastermind, downloaded the 14-digit code and transfer it to the credit card’s bar code. The suspects are reported to have established contacts with certain people on the internet for obtaining the codes and the technique for transferring them to the cards.
On swiping at the cash counter, shop owners would get a confirmation of the transaction, but the money would not be transferred to their account. Police said they had received many complaints following which a special team of the CCB was formed. Informants had tipped off police about the movement of Kannaiah, who was arrested near Guindy. Seven fake credit cards were recovered from him. A search is on for the mastermind.
