TIRUCHI: The Prosecution Department has planned to compile a computerised database of criminal cases pending in the lower courts across the State for instant access of information as well as to monitor their progress in future.

At present, the Department has embarked on a “pilot project” obtaining details of pending cases in lower courts in Krishnagiri district and in Thanjavur range comprising Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts initially. The details were being obtained from the police stations in the respective districts.

Named “Court Case Monitoring System”, the Prosecution Department has already set out on this exercise feeding 65,000 pending cases in the upcoming computerised database, the Inspector General of Police and Director of Prosecution M.K. Jha said here on Saturday.

The database would facilitate ready hand information about pending cases, knowledge about them besides enabling the department to make a good assessment of the cases and alerting the police personnel concerned, Mr. Jha told reporters on the sidelines of a refresher programme organised for prosecutors and police officers by the Prosecution Department here.

The complete details of each case obtained from the police stations would be uploaded in the dedicated website of the department which would also enable the public to know the exact status of the cases, Mr. Jha said.

Replying to a query, Mr. Jha said the Department estimated that there could be over three lakh pending cases in various lower courts across the State. He said the Superintendents of Police had been advised to forward details of pending criminal cases in lower courts in their respective districts to the Prosecution Department.

Earlier, presiding over the refresher programme Mr. Jha said the objective behind organising such a programme was to enable prosecutors and police officers enhance their legal knowledge.

T. Sudanthiram, Judge, Madras High Court, said effective participation of police and prosecutors was essential. Improper investigation by the law enforcers would ultimately end up in acquittal, he said while stating that lot of planning was required in investigation.

Since police officers were overburdened with multi-various duties including maintaining law and order and providing security, it was essential to set up a separate investigation wing to concentrate on the cases and for faster detection.

The Inspector General of Police, Central Zone Karan Singha, Commissioner of Police, Tiruchi, Pramod Kumar and Deputy Director of Prosecution Pon Peter Amaldoss spoke during the programme.

The Superintendent of Police of Tiruchi Rural, Pudukottai, Karur, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts, Deputy Commissioners of Police of Tiruchi City, senior police officers and prosecutors took part in the programme.
