Drive against violations

Coimbatore: The Transport Department, Coimbatore Circle, in a drive against violation of road rules checked 2,261 vehicles and booked 289 cases recently.
In a release, Deputy Transport Commissioner, Coimbatore Circle, T. Gunasekaran, said that the drive was conducted at six places in Erode, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris district namely L&T Bypass Road, Valanthayamaram check post, Palladam – Pollachi – Tirupur Road Junction at Dharapuram, Bhavani, Perundurai SIPCOT and Udhagamandalam.
During the drive, the authorities detected offences such as overloading of passengers, overloading of goods, misuse of permits, overloading of animals, unaccompanied luggage/parcels in omni buses, plying without driving licence, without pollution under control certificate, without insurance cover, without fitness certificate, use of air horns, use of dazzling headlights, without lax remittance and intra State operations.
The authorities detained six vehicles.
A total of Rs.1.76 lakh was realised as tax, Rs.92,850 was collected as compounding fee for offences besides proposing a compounding fee of Rs.3.98 lakh to be realised by the respective registering authorities after adhering to the procedural formalities such as serving of notices seeking explanation.
