“Erratic power supply hitting farm work”
Special Correspondent
Post Tamil speaking IAS officer in Lankan embassy to deal with fishermen issue
NAGAPATTINAM: The continuous power shut-down and erratic supply has affected the small-scale industries and farming operations in the delta region of Nagapattinam district, said N. Varadarajan, State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), here on Friday.
Addressing the conference of fish workers and fish workers union to create awareness about their rights and to protect fishing community, the CPM leader said that all the small scale units were crippled due to non-availability of power supply in rural areas and farmers could not operate their pumpsets for irrigation. Similarly, fish processing units have also been affected, he said.
Mr. Varadarajan condemned the firing on Tamil Nadu fishermen for crossing the territorial waters by mistake and urged the State and Central Governments to protect the fishermen. He suggested that a Tamil speaking IAS officer should be appointed in the Sri Lankan embassy.
The CPM leader pointed out that the price rise of all commodities, including fuel, had affected the common people and put them to great hardship. The Government should take immediate steps to alleviate the suffering of the people. Mr V.Marimuthu, MLA (CPM) of Nagapattinam and others spoke.
