This is with reference to the news item ‘World champion gets no incentives back home’ (The Hindu, dated. 19.8.08). Though Dronavalli Harika was crowned the prestigious “Queen of chess”, the State government has not presented her with any incentives. This is enough to understand the government’s discrimination against the game. The attitude of the government will definitely discourage the upcoming players of chess. G. Jagannadh, Anantapur Southern Railways’ reluctanceThe Southern Railways’ reported reluctance to extend the EMU service to Tirupati from Tiruthani is disappointing. The commuter rush between Chennai-Arakonam and Tirupati peaks in the morning and the evening thanks to the employees/workers residential extension. The reason adduced by the Railways on operational counts cannot be appreciated. The extension of the service will be a noon to the local people. It will also help relieve the long distance express trains of commuters invasion. N. Sadasivan Pillai, Guntakal Put Avilala to good purposeThis is with reference to the news item in The Hindu, August 22 on Supreme Court declining to stay the holding of a mammoth political meeting in the Avilala Pedda Cheruvu near Tirupati. This is now dry owing to construction of Kalyani dam and groundwater overexploitation, leading to dismantling of the tank bund, construction of buildings on the feeder channels use of ayacut lands for housing and government planning to use the tank area for developmental works. On the plea of Tirupati-based Intellectual Forum, the Apex court stayed the Government’s decision in February 2006 hoping for ground waqter enhancement by the undisturbed tank. The tank now looks ugly due to large-scale dumping of incinerated solid wastes by the Municipality. There is need for the government to move the apex court to permit using the tank for some developmental work. R. Jagadiswara Rao, Tirupati
