dated September 1, 1958: U.S. fleet in Formosa

The massing of a United States Armada in the Formosa Straits and the area around this island continued on August 31 as the Communists kept up a sporadic shelling of the Kuomintang held offshore islands near the mainland port of Amoy. The target date for completing the build-up was seen in Taipeh (Formosa) as September 6. The United States Taiwan (Formosa) Defence Command has announced that on that day joint amphibious manoeuvres of units of the American seventh fleet and the KMT Chinese fleet will begin off Southern Formosa.
