RAJAHMUNDRY: Reiterating the Left’s opposition to the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal, the CPI(M) has said that it would stoutly oppose violation of the assurances on the nuclear deal given by the Congress-led UPA Government in Parliament. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave nine specific assurances on the deal to Parliament and it was the responsibility of the Government to see that they were adhered to. “We will oppose anything in violation of the assurances given by the Prime Minister,” CPI (M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said. He, however, said the revised draft on the waiver was not yet disclosed. In a brief chat with reporters on his way to Kakinada to participate in a party programme, Mr. Yechury said the Left was collaborating with like-minded parties for taking up agitations against the nuclear deal, suicides by farmers, price rise and other major issues. Negotiations were on with parties like the Telugu Desam in this direction, he said. Criticising the Trinamool Congress and the Congress for stalling the Tata Motors’ car plant at Singur in West Bengal, he said Singur was not a Special Economic Zone and the West Bengal Government provided compensation that was three times more than the market value. In addition to owners, compensation was provided to those dependent on the acquired land and necessary training was being imparted to the eligible members of the affected families for giving them employment in the project. On the launch of film star Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam party, he said the CPI(M) would formulate its response after discussions at the State committee meeting on September 3.
