Deep rooted corruption

This has reference to the letter under caption “Root out corruption” published on 18-08-08. The author seems to be under utopia. India is steeped in corruption ever since independence. There is no area that is left without being corrupted. Any talk by political leaders or high official about rooting out corruption is plain hypocrisy. Every political party which promised to root out corruption if voted to power got itself entangled when it captured power. Let us search for one who will bell the cat.

Safety in trains

The surcharge being levied on rail tickets for providing safety to travellers appears to unutilised as noticed after ghastly incident in Gauthami express train. in which several passengers perished.

A few suggestions are made to avoid recurrence of such tragedies. Posting of security personnel in coaches, allotment of one TC to monitor one/two coaches only, against the existing system of four/six. Provision of fire extinguishers and a first aid box in each coach and public address system to wakeup the commuters during nights.

Apathy towards chess

This is with reference to the news item ‘World champion gets no incentives back home’ (The Hindu, dated. 19.8.08). Though Dronavalli Harika was crowned the prestigious “Queen of chess”, the State government has not presented her with any incentives.

This is enough to understand the government’s discrimination against the game. The attitude of the government will definitely discourage the upcoming players of chess.
