Another passenger, who picked it from the tray, held in Guwahati

NEW DELHI: The mobile phone of a former High Court judge of Jammu and Kashmir was stolen allegedly by another passenger at Delhi airport on Saturday.

The passenger was intercepted at Guwahati airport and the mobile phone recovered from him.

The incident took place around noon when the retired judge, Bashir A. Kirmani, was about to board a Spice Jet flight to Srinagar. He kept his mobile phone in a tray for security scan and was frisked by the security personnel. When he went to collect the mobile phone, he found it missing from the tray.

According to Central Industrial Security Force spokesperson Rohit Katiyar, the retired judge sought the help of CISF inspector in-charge in tracking down his mobile phone.

Subsequently those monitoring the closed-circuit television control room were alerted. On scanning the footage, they found a person lifting the mobile phone from the tray and pocketing it.

The security personnel tried to track down the person, but did not find him anywhere inside the airport premises.

They then checked the footage of a camera installed at the boarding gate and found that he had already boarded a flight to Guwahati. The airport authorities obtained a scanned photograph and other particulars of the passenger and faxed it to their counterparts in Guwahati. The passenger was intercepted soon after the flight landed there and the mobile phone recovered from his person.

Mr. Justice (Retd) Kirmani, who was informed about the recovery of his mobile phone, appreciated the swift action taken by the security agency.

On several occasions, the airport authorities have come across cases of passengers stealing articles of co-passengers and many of them have landed in the police net.
