BORN AGAIN: Area Commander S.R. Shinde, left, with the rescued student Suresh at Rameswaram Government Hospital on Sunday. RAMANATHAPURAM: Sunday turned out to be the “day of rebirth” for 21-year- old Suresh, a final-year B. Sc student of Yadava College in Madurai. Today Suresh is alive thanks to the timely help of marine commandos of Rameswaram naval detachment. Suresh and 17 friends, mostly from Madurai, had come to Rameswaram to attend a friend’s marriage after which they visited Mukundarayar Chathiram, a beachfront near Dhanushkodi. Most of them swam in the sea for about an hour and returned to the shore to change their dresses. Suddenly, Suresh, son of Gunasekaran of Iyer Bungalow, who was cleaning his towel in sea water, was pulled by a huge wave into the sea. His panicked friends could not do anything except raising an alarm. Hearing this, commandos Sanjay Kumar, R.K. Yadav and N.L. Singh, who were on duty at the Forward Observation Point, jumped into the sea and rescued him. The commandos performed “mouth to mouth” resuscitation to revive him and rushed him to the Government Hospital at Rameswarm in a naval vehicle. “I am proud to see our boys who acted swiftly to save a life,” Commander S.R. Shinde, Area Commander of the naval detachment told The Hindu after visiting him at the hospital
