Placid Rodriguez CHENNAI: Placid Rodriguez, renowned metallurgist and former director of IGCAR, Kalpakkam, died in Chennai on Sunday. He was 67. Dr. Rodriguez started his career in the atomic energy field when he joined the Department of Atomic Energy in 1960. He worked at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Bombay till 1974, when he moved to the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) at Kalpakkam (then known as the Reactor Research Centre) as a senior metallurgist. He established world class research laboratories for metallurgical research at the Centre and served as its director between 1992 and 2000. Dr. Rodriguez is known as an international expert on Mechanical Metallurgy, Welding Metallurgy and Nuclear Materials. He guided several colleagues in the science and engineering needed to advance fast breeder reactor technology in India. He has served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet, the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences, the Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Science and Engineering Research Council apart from teaching at IIT Madras and several National Institutes of Technology. Dr. Rodriguez was born in Quilon, Kerala and completed his B.Sc at Kerala University, going on to finish a B.E and later a Ph.D at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, an M.S at the University of Tennessee, and an MBA at the Indira Gandhi National Open University. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
