Five thousand atomic scientists from 66 nations, who assembled in Geneva for the U. N. Atoms for Peace Conference on September 1, heard pleas for an end to secrecy in atomic research and for international agreement on many phases of atomic power. Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, the U. N. Secretary-General, said the need for international agreement on many phases of atomic power was “obvious.” Prof. Francis Perrin, French High Commissioner for Atomic Energy, said he believed the conference would result in the complete elimination of secrecy in the field of controlled thermo-nuclear relations.
