Crafts festival from today

Kakinada: The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation is organising a crafts festival at Sri Venkateswara function hall here from September 2 to 11. About 60 craftsmen from different parts of the country will display their wares and also demonstrate the making of a few selected items, according to NEHHDC additional general manager D.C. Borkotoky.

He stated in a press release that the monthly production of handlooms of north eastern region comprises 7.5 percent of the national production and Manipur records 67.18 percent of the total exports of handicrafts and handlooms from the region. Totally 12.33 lakh craftsmen were employed in the north eastern States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Cane and bamboo comprise 45 percent of the handicrafts, artistic textiles 16.4 percent, embroidery 15.2 percent, wood crafts 7.6 percent metal crafts 4.4 percent, ornaments/ jewellery 4.2 percent and Teracotta/others 7.2 percent.
