Letters to the Editor
Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress are out to hog the limelight in Singur. West Bengal will lose the Nano project if the stalemate continues as many other States are waiting to welcome the Tata motors. Ms Banerjee should aid the process of development rather than resort to steps that prevent the functioning of the Tata plant. Visionaries such as Ratan Tata should be respected. All help should be rendered to him to succeed in his path-breaking project of manufacturing the world’s cheapest car. C.M. Umanath, Kozhikode The Nano is a revolutionary idea. It is unfortunate that Ms Banerjee and her followers are creating obstacles to the unique project. The Tatas, as always, have given a patient hearing and have decided to wait before taking a final decision on shifting the plant. If the plant is shifted out of Singur, it would be rather unfortunate. R.Unni Krishnan, Kochi It is regrettable that Ms Banerjee continues to stick to her demand saying she will discuss only the issue of return of the 400-acres of land which, she alleges, were forcibly acquired. Her opposition to the Nano project is unwarranted. The government has offered compensation and alternative land to the farmers. Will not West Bengal stand to benefit from the project? Confrontation will achieve nothing. The Trinamool Congress leader should act in the best interests of the State and start a dialogue with the Tatas and the government. B.H. Shanmukhappa, Davanagere
