New way of disposing of Ganesha idols

Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: The Gowri and Ganesha festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Hassan district. Ganesha idols which are immersed on the occasion, are generally disposed off at Devikere.

During February 2007, several fish died in this tank owing to lack of oxygen. To prevent further death of fish as well as to prevent tank pollution, the district administration has come out with a novel idea. Water from the Devikere tank will be filled in mobile water tankers, which will be parked in 14 places in the city. People have been requested to immerse their idols in these tankers. Deputy Commissioner Naveen Raj Singh, in a press release on Tuesday, said as chemicals were being used to make the idols, it would pollute the tank when immersed. Mr. Singh said the mobile tankers, loaded with water from the Devikere tank, would be parked at Hassanamba Circle, Government High School premises, Shankar Mutt road, K.R. Puram; Adichunchanagiri Kalyana Mantap on M.G. Road; Mini Vidhana Soudha, Kuvempu Nagar; Ganapathi temple near Housing Board; Aralimarada Vrutha near Gowri Koppalu; Basaveswara Kalyana Mantapa; Sanskrit Bhavan; Ganapathi temple, Hemavathi Nagar; Subramanyeswara Temple at Shanti Nagar, Kalamma temple at Siddaiah Nagar and near the Shivalingeswara Math at Thannerhalla.
