While Chikkamma died on the spot, nine of them sustained fractures Bangalore: One woman was killed and nine others injured, one seriously, when the lift of a factory building belonging to Srinidhi Packaging Industries at Kodigehalli, near Krishnaraja Puram, suddenly fell from the second floor here on Monday night. According to R. Asha, who works in the factory, the women were loading material into the lift when it suddenly dropped down. While Chikkamma died on the spot, nine others sustained fractures, including Hemavathi, who has been admitted to Hosmat hospital in a serious condition. Aruna, Lakshmamma, Bhagyamma, Reddamma, Venkateshamma, Nagaratnamma, Padmamma and Puttamma broke their ankles on impact and they have been admitted to a private hospital in K.R. Puram. One woman has a broken hip. Labour Minister B.N. Bache Gowda, who visited the injured women in the hospital, along with the Director of Factories and Boilers H. Srinivasaiah, said that the owner of the factory had not got permission to install the lift. The lift was not of a standard make, he added. ReliefThe owner, Ashok Kumar, told the minister that he would give a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased Chikkamma, and that he would give suitable relief to the injured workers. He said that the factory would also meet their medical expenses. He added that a member of the deceased would be given a job in the factory. An officer in the Labour Department said that all the workers were members of the Employees State Insurance Scheme and hence they would be given compensation under the Workmen’s Compensation Act. The Minister said that criminal cases would be registered against the owner for the lapse. Mr. Bache Gowda said that the number of accidents in factories across the State was on the rise and told the officers to be vigilant and see that such accidents did not recur.
