Annual ritual: K.G. Bopaiah and Appachu Ranjan offering ‘bagina’ at Honnammanakere on Tuesday. DODDAMALTE (KODAGU): Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly K.G. Bopaiah said on Tuesday that the Government had decided to develop all temples in the State in the next five years. He was speaking at the Honnammanakere here after offering “bagina” to the tank along with Madikeri MLA M.P. Appachu Ranjan. The event coincided with the Gowri festival organised by Basaveshwara and Swarna Gowri Honnamma Samiti. The Government would give attention to all pilgrim centres through a special drive, he said. Mr. Bopaiah said the Government had sanctioned Rs. 37 lakh for the development of the Honnammanakere. Funds would be released through the Department of Tourism. However, it was a pilgrim centre and it should not be converted into a tourist spot, which could affect the sanctity of the place, he added. Mr. Bopaiah hinted at initiating steps to clear encroachment upon the land around the Honnammanakere. The administrative body of the temple should protect its land once it was cleared of encroachment. Steps would be taken to prevent the pilgrim centre from being converted into a tourist spot, he said. Mr. Ranjan said the Government had agreed to sanction funds for the temple keeping in view its historical importance. He would request the Government to release Rs. 50 lakh more for the development of Honnamma Tayi Temple nearby, he added.
