Water and blood samples have been sent for tests: health officer

DHARWAD: Eighteen children have been admitted in the Civil Hospital here for gastroenteritis.

While six children aged below 12 were admitted in the hospital on Monday night, 12 more were admitted on Tuesday with complaints of diarrhoea and vomiting.

Contaminated water is said to be reason for this. The victims are from Laxmi Singanakere, Jannat Nagar, Manikilla, Haveripet, Fish Market, Kolikere and Gollara Oni of Dharwad. The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation officials have taken samples of water from these areas for tests. District Health Officer S.D. Avaradi, who visited the hospital on Tuesday, said that the blood and stool samples of the children had been sent for tests. However, he said that it was not cholera, but gastroenteritis.

MLA Seema Masuti visited the hospital. The children are said to be out of danger.

Meanwhile, the corporation has appealed to the people to take precautionary measures in the wake of gastroenteritis cases in Dharwad. It has urged the people to drink only boiled water and keep the surroundings of their houses clean. It has appealed to them not to eat snacks and cut fruits sold in the open. Health Officer Biradar said that directions had been issued to hotels to provide safe boiled water to their customers. Precautionary measures were being taken to prevent gastroenteritis from spreading further. Meanwhile, the corporation has made arrangements to provide safe drinking water through tankers in the affected areas.
