Temple gopuram work begins

CHENNAI: Construction of seven-tier gopuram of Sri Kurungaleeswarar Temple and renovation work of Sri Vaikuntavasa Perumal Temple near Koyambedu were inaugurated on Monday.
According to the legend, the construction work of Sri Kurungaleeswarar Temple gopuram was initiated by Chola King Kulothungan but had to be suspended before completion. The State government announced in the recent budget that it would construct the seven-tier gopuram. After conducting soil test, it was advised that the existing old mandapam at the entrance be removed and a raja gopuram constructed.
An estimate was prepared for Rs.81 lakh for construction of the seven-tier gopuram. The cost would be met through donations .
Temple renovation work for Sri.Vaikuntavasa Perumal Temple at the cost of Rs 20 lakh was also commissioned.
