Southern Railway stuns Indian Bank

Chennai: Southern Railway shocked the top notch team, Indian Bank, in the men’s section of the Champions Trophy volleyball tournament at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here.

Sivarajan and Prabhakar were outstanding for the Railway outfit, while Saikrishnan and Kalaivanan were prominent for Indian Bank.

The results: Men: Sathyabama bt SDAT 17-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-10; Southern Railway bt Indian Bank 25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-10. Women: Hindustan Sports Foundation bt Panimalar 26-24, 25-22; SDAT bt JBAS College 22-25, 25-07, 25-13; St. Joseph’s bt GKM 25-8, 19-25, 25-17; Armed Police bt Dr. Sivanthi Club 25-20, 25-17.

Charulatha and Thirushkamini to lead

Charulatha and M.D. Thirushkamini will lead the Combined Districts and the City women’s teams in four one-day under-19 matches at the St. Bede’s ground on September 4, 5, 8 and 9.

The teams:

Combined Districts: Charulatha (capt.), K. Sandhya, P.N. Kirthana, J. Anushka, C. Madhavi, S. Jayanthi, G. Sapna, R. Gowthami, S. Bairavi, M.R. Vidivelli, Vandana Shree, S. Ektha, N. Maheshwari and V.S. Vinodhin. Manager: Lissy Jose.

City: M.D. Thirushkamini (capt.), L. Nethra, C.V. Swetha, K. Ch. Sugetha, D. Manimegalai, Shebani M. Bhaskar, K. Sandya, M. Vinithra, M.D. Sugaragamini, Aishwarya Priyadarshini, S. Gayathri, J. Rithika, S. Sharada and B. Uvashree.

Football tournament

The CFA-S. Nagalingam Nadar Memorial invitation football tournament for colleges will be held from September 10 to 20.

Entries will be based on first-come-first-serve-basis.

The tournament will be held on knock-out basis to select the eight teams to play in the league. The winner will take home Rs. 25,000, while the runner-up and the third place will receive Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively.
