J.C. Nagar violence accused seek bail

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Two residents of Bangalore, accused by the police of being involved in the violence that rocked J.C. Nagar recently, on Wednesday petitioned the Karnataka High Court for bail.

The petitioners, Syed Tanveer (22) of Bilal Masjid in K.G. Halli, and Waseem of Shivajainagar, said the police had falsely accused them of fomenting the trouble in J.C. Nagar in which several persons, including policemen, were injured. They said the J.C. Nagar police and the State had accused them of beheading a pig and throwing its head in front of a mosque in J.C. Nagar. This incident led to violence on July 11, 2008 in which several persons, including policemen, were injured.

They said the police had registered cases against them under Sections 143, 144, 148, 427, 333, 295, 341 read with Section 149 of the Indian Penal Code. They said the Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court 10) on August 12 had rejected their bail plea. The Government advocate opposed bail, saying the act of the accused had led to violence in the area. He said a senior police officer, DCP (East), Siddaraju, was injured in the eye when he tried to control violence. Justice Ashok B. Hinchigeri adjourned further hearing of the case.
