Registration on for pookkalam contest

Thiruvananthapuram: The second edition of The Hindu-Metroplus Pookkalam contest to be held at Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi on September 9 has evoked a good response from institutions, colleges and associations.

Registration for the contest continues. A few more teams will be accommodated.

The contest will take place between 9 a.m. and to 12.30 p.m. at Government College for Women, Vazhuthacaud, Thiruvananthapuram, and the TDM Hall, D.H. Road, Kochi.

The first three winners will receive a cash prize of Rs.20,000, Rs.12,500 and Rs.7,500 respectively.

There will be consolation prizes of Rs.1,500 for 10 teams. All the participating teams will be given Rs.500 as reimbursement of the cost of procuring flowers.

Visitors to the venues can also hope to win attractive prizes like semi-automatic washing machine, grill microwave oven and DVD player through a lucky dip.

While Union Bank of India is the title sponsor, Berger Paints India Ltd., Nikon India Pvt. Ltd., and Sprinkle Salt are the associate sponsors and AVT Premium Tea, the beverage partner. Prizes are sponsored by Kirtilals and Godrej Appliances.

Only 50 teams will be allowed for the contest on first-come-first-served basis. Each team should have five members, out of which three should be women, including the team captain. All the team members should be above 15 years of age. Each institution, college or association can send a maximum of three teams.

The floral carpets (pookkalams) can be circular or square, but the length and breadth should not exceed five ft. They should have a minimum area of 19 sq. ft and maximum 25 sq. ft.

Flowers will have to be arranged by the contestants. No artificial colours, materials or colorants should be used. Harmony of colours and shapes, design innovation and neatness of the pookkalams are the factors that will be considered by the judges.

The pookkalam should be prepared in two-and-a-half hours which include time for drawing and arranging flowers.
