dated September 5, 1958: Desai on Govt.’s efforts

Mr. Morarji Desai, Indian Finance Minister, told a British television audience on September 3 that the problem of relieving poverty in India within a reasonable time had necessitated taking economic risks. He was appearing on the British Broadcasting Corporation television programme “Press conference.” With him on the programme were journalists Andrew Boyd, of the Economist, Richard Fry of the Manchester Guardian, John Freeman, of the New Statesman and Richard Goolj-Adams. Mr. Desai said Indian planners had had to face great difficulties with less experience than they had now acquired. Mr. Desai said: “We will be more exact in evolving the Third Five-Year Plan and make allowances at the start so that whatever difficulties encountered will be met at the very beginning.
