This Day That Age
The leaders of the Tamil Federal Party of Ceylon and the Sinhalese Jatika Vimukti Peramuna (National Liberation Front) would be released from house detention on September 5, it was learned in Colombo on September 4. They were taken into custody early in June after their parties were proscribed upon the declaration of a state of emergency throughout Ceylon on May 27, to quell countrywide Tamil-Sinhalese riots. Authoritative sources said their release might not mean removal of the ban on the parties, nor, the lifting of the three-month-old state of emergency.
