Supreme Court had ordered removal of encroachments around lake Step will ‘mitigate the problems of the farmers’, claims Government HYDERABAD: The Assembly adopted a unanimous resolution on Thursday requesting the National Board of Wildlife and the Central Empowered Committee to reduce the boundary of Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary from +5 feet contour to + 3 feet contour ‘to mitigate the problems of the farmers.’ Interestingly, the Congress and the TDP were one in deciding to reduce the area of the wildlife sanctuary, home to rare species of migratory birds, by changing the contours of India’s biggest freshwater lake. As the lake was encroached upon on all sides by political bigwigs on one hand and farmers and fishermen on the other, the Supreme Court ordered removal of encroachments. Following this direction, the Rajasekhara Reddy government launched a massive drive to remove all encroachments and got several influential people arrested in a bid to restore the glory of the lake. Even the Chandrababu Naidu government earlier had issued an order (GOMs 120) in 1999 for the protection of the lake. Volte faceBut, during his recent ‘Mee Kosam’ yatra, Mr. Naidu extensively toured the Kolleru Lake area and promised to reduce its boundary if the Telugu Desam was returned to power as the livelihood of three lakh people was at stake. Today, the Congress government also did a volte face by introducing the resolution. Minister for Forests and Environment S. Vijaya Rama Raju, who moved the resolution, said that a large number of farmers owning ‘Zeroythi’ Patta lands in an extent of 14,932 acres were also included in the Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary when GO 120 was issued. It said “that these farmers are not able to get adequate income from traditional agriculture without applying chemical fertilizer. The compensation proposed to be paid for acquiring these lands will cause a heavy burden on the State exchequer.” Uproarious scenesThe debate on the resolution was marked by uproarious scenes after TDP members rushed to the podium protesting against Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s trenchant attack against Mr. Naidu, who, he said, was mainly responsible for the problem relating to the sanctuary. Disputing the assertion of Mr. Naidu, he said the authority to change the boundary was no longer with the State Government, but with the empowered committee of the Supreme Court.
