Govindan Nair to be DG of Prosecutions

C. Gouridasan Nair

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government is understood to have decided to appoint senior criminal lawyer in the Thiruvananthapuram Bar V.G. Govindan Nair as Director-General of Prosecutions. He would replace P.G. Thampi, who had stepped down from the post over a week ago citing personal reasons.

A fellow traveller of the CPI(M), Mr. Govindan Nair is well known both as a prominent criminal lawyer and a keen sports enthusiast. He had handled several sensational criminal cases over the last nearly four decades of his career at the bar and had shown an equal interest in sports promotion. The government had appointed him as a member of the Kerala State Sports Commission taking into account his contributions to the field of sport, but would now be pulling him out of the Commission, informed sources said.

Mr. Govindan Nair had served as member of the executive committee of the Indian Olympic Committee from 1983 to 1987 in his capacity as president of the Kerala Olympic Association and was primarily instrumental in bringing the Second National Games to Thiruvananthapuram in December, 1987. He had also played a pivotal role in the enactment of the Kerala Sports Act of 2000. At the time, he was president of the Kerala Sports Council. The government had been on the look out for a suitable person to replace Mr. Thampi, whose decision to step down from the post had caused considerable embarrassment to it.
