Battling the blaze: Firemen in action at Spencer Plaza on Thursday.
CHENNAI: A fire broke out on the first floor of Spencer Plaza Phase-1 on Thursday night. A garment shop took the brunt. No casualty was reported in this incident.
The blaze, which was reported around 10.20 p.m., was brought under control within 30 minutes. A total of 12 water tenders and nine fire tenders were pressed into service. Fire and Rescue Services personnel had to break open a glass panel to direct the jets of water . There were several moments of panic following the fire and smoke billowing out of the building could be seen from a distance.
Employees of IT and ITES firms located in the top floors were alerted, and they rushed out of the building. The cause of the fire is yet to be established, but a short circuit is suspected, said Fire and Rescue Services officers.
Unlike in the case of a recent fire on Ranganathan Street, T.Nagar, fire men had easy access to the spot, mainly on account of the setback space available inside the building.
