De-recognition of Unani college leaves students in the lurch
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: With the Central Council of Indian Medicine de-recognising the Unani Medical College here for 2008-2009, 20 students who have already secured admission to Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery are left wondering about their future.
A team of the Council, functioning under the Department of AYUSH in the Union Ministry of Health, had inspected the college at Arumbakkam and recommended de-recognition on the grounds that the college did not meet the minimum standards. Inadequate number of teaching staff and beds and limited land allotment were cited as the reason, according to Unani practitioners here.
Along with the Unani Medical College, more than 50 per cent of all Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani courses all over the country were de-recognised by the Council for 2008-2009, according to sources.
The news of the de-recognition reached the State early this week. In the meantime, counselling for filling 26 seats in the Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery course had been held, and 20 seats allotted.
Practitioners’ appeal
In an appeal to the Central and State governments, Unani practitioners and organisations have urged that the minimum standards be met so that recognition can be granted again. This will enable the 20 students to pursue their course.
