Muthu, Jain on course

Chennai: It was smooth sailing for Pushparajan Muthu and Sandip Jain in conditions ideal for the sport at the RMYC Vestas 420 Nationals which began at the Harbour, here on Wednesday. The duo topped in the first six races.

Harnessing the wind and riding the waves equally well were Rohini Rau and Pallavi Shanbag of the RMYC in the women’s section, who too nailed the first six races.

RMYC Commodore, Navaz Currimbhoy, spoke glowingly of the conditions after the boats drifted home in the golden hue of the sunset, a soft breeze bringing down the temperature. “The wind speed was between 12 and 15 knots and the swells were 1.5 to 2m high. The conditions encouraged good sailing,” he said.

Sandip Jain of the Army Yachting Node (Mumbai) said sailing in these parts was, both, pleasant and challenging.

“In Mumbai, expect in the monsoon, you do not get the combination of the chops and the swells you encounter here,” he said. The championship concludes on Friday with the concluding three races.

The results: On Thursday (provisional): Men: 1st race: 1. Pushparajan Muthu & Sandip Jain (AYN – I), 2. Narandra Singh & Ashok Kumar Luhach (AYN), 3. Mithu Nahak & Azar Shaikh (AWSA).

2nd race: 1. Pushparajan Muthu & Sandip Jain (AYN), 2. K. Yakobu & Bikash Kumar (AWSA); 3. Narandra Singh & Ashok Kumar Luhach (AYN).

3rd race: 1. Pushparajan Muthu & Sandip Jain (AYN), 2. Narandra Singh & Ashok Kumar Luhach (AYN), 3. K. Yakobu & Bikash Kumar (AWSA).

Women: 1st Race: 1. Rohini Rau & Pallavi Shanbhag (RMYC), 2. Aysha Lobo & Taramathi Matiwade (RBYC).
