Thiruvananthapuram: Rape suspect and former Sub Inspector of Police (Attingal) N. Vijayan surrendered before the investigating officer Assistant Commissioner E. Sherifudeen on Thursday. The Rural police had booked Vijayan on the charge of rape in May on the basis of a complaint filed by a 36-year-old housewife whose husband was employed in the Gulf. She is the mother of two children. The victim, who was disowned by her husband and relatives after the incident, is currently living on charity. Earlier the High Court had denied Vijayan bail in the case. The police have booked him under section 376 (2) (a) of the Indian Penal Code, a provision which applies to policemen who commit rape in their area of jurisdiction. The woman had taken a loan of Rs.5,000 from a neighbourhood self-help group (SHG). She failed to repay the loan following which the SHG members confiscated her television. She met Vijayan on May and requested police intervention for the return of her possessions. The police said Vijayan asked the SHG members to return the woman’s belongings on May 16, which they did not heed. The woman waited in front of the station till 1 p.m. The woman alleged in her complaint that Vijayan took her in his car to his rented house and sexually exploited her. She lodged the complaint on May 23, seven days after the alleged incident. Investigators said the SI had called the woman 11 times on his mobile phone on the day of the alleged rape. She reciprocated the call six times. The Rural police had suspended Vijayan a few days before the incident on the charge of suspected misconduct. However, he got himself reinstated within three days allegedly with the help of a local politician who is his relative and an elected functionary of the Attingal Municipal Corporation. The Attingal magistrate remanded the suspect for 14 days in judicial custody.
