Cultural treat for festival season

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cultural programmes in 14 venues in the capital, food festival and trade fair are the highlights of the Kerala Tourism’s seven-day Onam celebrations that get under way in the city from September 10.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the celebrations at 6.30 p.m. on September 10 at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium. The Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium will be the focal point of the government- sponsored celebrations. Popular artistes will participate in the mega show to be organised by Kairali TV, Asianet, Jeevan TV, ACV, Amrita and Kerala Kaumudi.

Traditional art forms will be presented by reputed artistes under the aegis of the Kerala Folklore Academy at three venues – Sooryakanthi Auditorium, Nattarangu, Thiruvarangu – on the Kanakakunnu palace premises.

The Poojappura grounds will be the venue for ganamela. P. Jayachandran and P. Suseela will lead the ganamela on September 13. Dance forms will be staged in Nishagandhi open air theatre, Kathaprasangam in Gandhi Park, Kathakali in Theerthapada Mandapam, drama in VJT Hall and percussion ensemble in Marytr’s Column at Palayam.

Kalaripayattu will be presented in museum grounds on all days. A 11-day trade fair will be held from September 8 at the Sooryakanthi exhibition grounds from September 8. Leading hotels in the city and Kovalam will participate in the food festival to be organised from September 9 to 16 at Sooryakanthi exhibition grounds.

The avenue trees and buildings along the Raj Bhavan-East Fort stretch will be lit up using generators. Sports competitions will be inaugurated on September 7. A mini marathon for women will be held from Kowdiar to Palayam at 3 p.m. and one for men from Palayam to Shanghumughom at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The celebrations will conclude with the pageantry from Kowdiar at 2 p.m. on September 16.
