Call to settle Chengara struggle

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) general secretary T. J. Chandrachoodan has urged the State government to take the initiative to find a negotiated settlement for the Chengara struggle by landless dalits.

Addressing a news conference here on Friday, Prof. Chandrachoodan pointed out that the struggle was taking a confrontationist course what with plantation workers coming on the scene against the landless dalits. While the encroachment into the estate land was in itself no justification for claiming land, the government must take steps to provide land to all landless people.

Majority of the landless in Kerala were dalits. While it was a fact that not sufficient land was available in the State for distribution to all the landless, the government had the duty to provide them with at least land for dwelling purposes. It should also see if land could be found for cultivation at least on a collective basis, he said.
