HYDERABAD: Conceding a demand by members of the Legislative Council on Friday, Home Minister K. Jana Reddy announced that action would be initiated against managements operating television channels for telecasting objectionable crime content if it was within the powers of State government. The Minister disclosed that the rules framed under the Cable Television Networks Act and Rules, 1995, was under the purview of the Centre. However, the State government would review the rules and explore possibilities to prohibit such telecast or would write to the Centre requesting it to regulate telecast of harmful content that would have a negative impact on viewers. Admitting that no case was registered so far, for telecast of obscene content or crime stories either by the City Police Commissioners or district Collectors under the Act, the Minister asserted that if any telecast was in violation of the Act, the authorised officers could prohibit such programmes. Earlier, Dadi Veerabhadra Rao (TDP) raised the matter under rule 311 saying despicable crime content based on dramatisation of real life incidents would harm the society .The government should not allow telecast of crime stories like ‘Neralu Ghoralu’, ‘Crime Watch’ etc., as public, particularly women, were deeply concerned . Sitaramulu of CPI(M) and D. Rami Reddy (Teachers) demanded that an ordinance be passed to stop such shows.
