HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam Party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Friday described as day-dreaming, Praja Rajyam leaders claim that their party was the only alternative to Congress. Responding to a question at a press conference here, Mr. Naidu said all sorts of claims could be made by leaders sitting in their office. They would know the reality when they come out and go to the field. “Moreover it is people who will decide such issues.” He wondered how the Praja Rajyam leaders could come up with such a preposterous claim when they were confident of winning only in West and East Godavari districts. In contrast, Telugu Desam evolved from the people’s desire to have an effective alternative and for 26 years, it had played the role remarkably, working for the poor and ensuring social justice, he said. “In the mean time several parties have come and gone.” Asked why then leaders were leaving his party, Mr. Naidu said only those who were disgruntled and lost the local support were quitting. This they were doing after enjoying the posts of Cabinet Ministers during TDP’s nine-year rule. In a way this was better for the party as new second rung leaders would now get a chance. “You will see our party emerging victorious in 2009 Assembly elections.” On the ongoing meetings of the party’s core committee on Telangana, he said the party would finalise a stand in tune with the existing political situation and a policy that would be acceptable to all. Referring to the Assembly proceedings during the last two days, he said it was unfortunate that the hallowed forum was being misused by the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues to hurl abuses on the Opposition. Never in his three decade long political career, did he come across a Chief Minister who targets the Leader of the Opposition viciously, he added. “It shows his frustration over imminent defeat in the Assembly elections.”
