Case of rocket firing on police station in 2005

Raji Reddy accuses government of covert operations

Yakaiah involved in Dantewada jailbreak case

ANANTAPUR: Central Committee member of CPI (Maoist) Mallu Raji Reddy was produced in the Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate’s court at Kadiri in the district on Thursday in the case pertaining to the Maoist attack on Obuladevara Cheruvu police station with crude rockets.

The attack was carried out on April 20, 2005, and the rocket had exploded in AP Transco premises adjacent to the police station.

Initially, the case was registered as “accused not known” by the Obuladevara Cheruvu police station but the Kataram police in Telangana filed a chargesheet against Raji Reddy claiming that he had accepted his involvement in the firing of the rocket on the Obuladevara Cheruvu police station along with other incidents in the State during their interrogation earlier this year. Judge Srinivasulu adjourned the case to September 19.

Letter to newspapers

Meanwhile, Raji Reddy sent a letter to newspapers through his lawyer Nagender Reddy accusing the State government of suppressing the Maoist movement in the State with covert operations. He, however, exuded confidence that the movement would again gain strength at an appropriate time.

Top leader surrenders

Warangal Staff Reporter writes: Top Maoist leader Bashapaka Yakaiah alias Santhosh alias Sujith alias Mahesh who was responsible for the Dantewada jailbreak surrendered to the police in the presence of Superintendent of Police V. C. Sajjanar here on Friday.

Yakaiah said he was lodged in the Dantewada jail along with 100 other naxals. Narrating how he escaped from jail, Yakaiah said he collected the chilli powder provided to him daily in jail and threw it on the prison personnel. He collected the weapons and escaped. In that jailbreak 200 other prisoners also escaped with the help of local militants.

The SP said Yakaiah joined the CPI(Maoist) due to a family dispute in 2002. He worked in Chityal area and Yellandu in Khammam district before being shifted to Chhattisgarh in 2004.

He was involved in exchanges of fire in 2005 at Andugulameedhi in Venkatapur mandal of Warangal district, at the National Park area in 2005, at Pamedu in 2005 and the attack on the sentry of the Central Prison at Dantewada and snatching of weapons.

Mr. Sajjanar described the surrender as an important development and appealed to other underground naxals to give up arms and lead a normal life.

“The State government has launched several schemes for the welfare of the surrendered cadres of revolutionary parties. The naxals should come out and lead a happy life,” he said.
