THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Education Minister M.A. Baby said here on Friday that the single window system for admission to Plus One courses had helped to ensure that the poor, Dalits and backward classes got their quotas in full. In reply to the criticism raised by Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy in an open letter, the Minister said that it helped to remove ambiguities and inadequacies in the system. Steps had been taken to ensure that all Scheduled Castes and Schedule Tribe students, who had applied for the courses, received admissions. Mr. Baby noted that Aswathy, who committed suicide at Mananthawadi, had actually received admission in the third round of allotment. However, she failed to report at the college and join the course in time. It was not right to put the blame for her suicide on the single window system. It had been widely publicised that students should join the courses allotted to them within the specified time. Since this was the first time that the system was introduced, the stipulation had been relaxed to some extent. Next year, the system would be continued with improvements in the light of the experience gained this year and legal backing.
