MALAPPURAM: Former soldiers who served in the 7 Field Regiment (Gazala) of the Indian Army will organise a family gathering at Guruvayur on October 2. P.N. Nair, secretary of the organizing committee, requested all those who served in the Regiment to attend the meeting. The 7 Field Regiment was one of the oldest units of the Indian artillery, which celebrated the diamond jubilee of the Gazala Day in 2002. The Regiment won the honour title ‘Gazala’ in the deserts of Libya in 1942 while deployed in the village of Gazala, near Bir Hachiem, as part of the Allied North African campaign during the Second World War. The 18 Field Battery at Bir Hachiem was subjected to a raid on its gun positions by approximately 100 tanks of the German elite Panzer Corps under Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. Despite being badly outnumbered and static, the valiant Thambis engaged the Panzers with their devastatingly accurate direct fire. In the bloodiest tank-versus-gun battle ever recorded in military history, the battery destroyed 26 tanks, thus forcing the Germans to beat a hasty retreat. Mr. Nair can be reached at 0494-2689909.
