PUDUCHERRY: Teachers of government schools in Puducherry will learn ways to guide students in the adolescent age group at a two-day training programme, which was inaugurated here on Saturday.

The programme, organised by the Puducherry Women’s Commission, aims at enabling teachers to guide adolescents and make them aware of the psychological and biological changes.

Inaugurating the programme, Social Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy said teachers should impart discipline to students apart from giving quality education. “The teachers should consider students of government schools as their own children,” he said, adding that the schemes should reach the poor without delay and urged officials to accomplish their works as quickly as possible.

Regarding the importance of counselling for students, Deputy Director (Women) of Education S. Mariappan said counselling was important for students from Standards VIII to XII.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan had already worked on these lines, he said.

Exhorting teachers to make good use of such programmes, he said, “Teachers should utilise this training programme and solve the problems of students in the adolescent age group.” He also stressed the importance of creating awareness among mothers on proper registration of names of children in the birth certificates to avoid problems later.

Councillor Annibal Nehru emphasised the importance of educating students on sanitation and traffic sense.

Commission chairperson S. Kamalini said they were planning to extend the programme for all teachers of government schools. “The programme will also enable the teachers to motivate the students to study well,” she said.

N. Anand MLA was present.
