CHENNAI: “There is a mismatch between knowledge and wisdom today,” said B.K.Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore.

He was speaking at Guru Samarpan, where ‘ParamAcharya’ and ‘Acharya’ awards were conferred on 14 teachers from diverse fields, including Carnatic music, sports and theatre, on the occasion of Teacher’s Day. Today, children are given the knowledge to achieve a career but no one realises that a career is only a means to serve a higher calling, said Mr. Vanavarayar. “Nations are built in their educational institutions,” he said, quoting former President Dr.S.Radhakrishnan, and added that we need to take a hard look at our educational system to understand whether right values are being inculcated.

N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu, and president of The Music Academy, who presided over the event, said, “Society has not accorded the recognition due to teachers all these years.” Though the case may be different in case of individuals, when it comes to the society collectively, teachers are not conferred with the dignity and financial rewards which they deserve, he said. The ‘ParamAcharya’ awards were conferred on mridangam maestro Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, lawyer R. Krishnamurthy, bharatanatyam dancer Chitra Visweswaran, orthopaedician S.Soundarapandian, vedic scholar V.G.Subramania Ganapadigal, and artist A.V.Ilango. The ‘Acharya’ awards were conferred on Carnatic musician Sudha Raghunathan, danseuse Shobana, educationists K. Nirmala Prasad and V.Rajagopalan, journalist Maalan, theatre personality Crazy Mohan, cricketer Robin Singh and Ranjini Manian of Global Adjustments.

It was organised by T.S. Narayanaswamy, Managing Director of Info Network Management System, promoter of Call-Teachers 2555555, a telephone search facility. K.V. Rangaswami, Director and President of Larsen & Toubro, participated.
