Tiruvannamalai: All India Agricultural Workers Union (AIAWU) has planned to stage a demonstration in Chengalpattu on September 15 to urge the government to acquire government lands in Siruthavur Bungalow. CPI (M) State executive member K. Balakrishnan, who took part in the State committee meeting of AIAWU, held here on Friday told reporters that the State committee resolved to conduct the demonstration demanding the government to act up on the interim report of the Justice K.P.Sivasubramaniam Committee appointed to enquire the Siruthavur land row. “Even after the judge in his interim report recommended the government to acquire 33 acres of poromboke land occupied by the bungalow, government was yet to act. We demand the government to acquire the land immediately and distribute it to the landless poor,” he said. On the power crisis in the State, Mr. Balakrishnan said that the duration of power cut in villages is more than what was officially announced. Actual power supply available in villages is less than 5 hours a day, while at least 12 hours of supply is necessary for crops, he said, adding that it caused severe damage to crops which rely on pump sets for irrigation. “Actual reason for the present power crisis is successive governments’ failure to pay attention to augment power production while merely going ahead with extending number of connections. Power projects such as the Jayamkondam still remain in the drafting stage,” he said. The joint convention of various farmers association will be held in Thanjavur on September 29 , he added.
