GULBARGA: Karnataka High Court judge H.N. Nagamohandas has stressed the need for waging a psychological war against female foeticide in order to maintain a healthy sex ratio in the interests of humanity. Speaking after inaugurating a three-day divisional-level workshop on an intensive campaign against female foeticide organised by the All India Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane, the Women’s Study Centre of Kannada University and Pragnya Kanunu Salaha Samiti here, Mr. Nagamohandas said, “If a war has to be waged against female foeticide, which is growing at an alarming rate, every individual involved in the campaign should prepare for a sustained struggle against all odds.” Mr. Nagamohandas, who is considered an expert on the Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques Act, said such workshops at regular intervals would help create awareness among social workers and activists to educate people on the need to end the practice of female foeticide. He said the sex ratio in the country was going down sharply, and the 2001 Census put it at 933. He said the PC and PNDT Act had enough powers to curb female foeticide, but the only hindrance was lack of commitment among officials to implement the Act strictly and force medical professionals to adhere to its provisions. Delegates from Gulbarga, Bidar, Dharwad, Raichur, Koppal, Gadag, Bijapur and Bagalkot districts participated in the workshop.
