Staff Correspondent

Pipeline from Gorur will bring Hemavathi water to city

Making a point: H.S. Prakash, MLA, addressing presspersons in Hassan on Saturday.

HASSAN: The Union Government has granted Rs. 200 crore for a drinking water supply scheme in Hassan, with the Hemavathi as the source, H.S. Prakash, MLA, has said. The entire project, right from the stage of estimation to execution, should be carried out by the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board.

He told presspersons here on Saturday that the City Municipal Council was preparing estimates and project reports to be sent to the Centre. The main pipeline would be laid from Gorur to Hassan, and villages in between would also get drinking water.

Mr. Prakash said the project would meet the drinking water needs of 18 lakh people.

He said that following the recent rains, as many 13 tanks in Hassan taluk had breached causing a loss of Rs. 25 lakh. In addition, fields had been flooded and standing crops destroyed.

Drainage pipes

Mr. Prakash said Rs. 5 crore was required to lay drainage pipes in the city to prevent sewage from entering houses in low-lying areas. He said some people had blocked drainage lines after building houses on them in the KHB Colony. These houses would be demolished soon.

He wanted a task force to be formed comprising officials from the CMC and the Police and Revenue departments to remove encroachments.

He said that in 2001 the Karnataka Housing Board entrusted the task of maintaining the KHB Colony to the City Municipal Council on the condition that it provide basic amenities such as roads, drinking water and drainage facilities. But nothing was done.

CMC president Ratnamma Mahantesh and vice-president Shankar were present.
