Rs. 15 crore allocated for marriage halls Separate departments to be established soon BANGALORE: The Minister for Haj and Wakfs and Minority Welfare Mumtaz Ali Khan has said that the Government is not hesitant to adopt any new schemes and programmes that help the development of Muslims and other minorities in the State. Dr. Khan was addressing an interactive session with a delegation of the Secunderabad-based All India Muslim Educational Society and some non-governmental organisations organised by the State Minorities Commission here on Saturday. The objective of the interactive session was to explore the possibilities of adopting the minority welfare programmes launched by the Andhra Pradesh Government. Clarifying that he was concerned only with the programmes to be launched, Dr. Khan said that the Government had earmarked Rs. 143 crore for the cause of minority development in its 2008-09 budget. The budgetary allocation during the previous fiscal was Rs. 96.67 crore. It had provided Rs. 15 crore for the construction of marriage halls throughout the State as against Rs. 6.50 crore provided in the previous budget. The Government was open to all feasible ideas that could promote the cause of minority development, he said. The leader of the AIMES Basheeruddin Babu Khan, a Minister in the Chandrababu Naidu Government, explained the various programmes launched by the Andhra Pradesh Government for the welfare of minorities. Dr. Khan said the Department of Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare was looking after all the development activities of the backward classes and minorities in Andhra Pradesh. After a review of the situation, the Government had decided to set up separate departments for ensuring speedy implementation of programmes and set right the administrative hitches, he added. The Andhra Pradesh Government had earmarked Rs. 126 crore for the minority development with a focus on education, he said.
