Steps taken to ensure supply of sufficient stocks: Rosaiah

Railways alerted to monitor rake supply for transport

Only 23 lakh tonnes supplied against need of 69 lakh tonnes

HYDERABAD: In the wake of growing unrest among farmers over supply of fertilizer, Finance Minister K. Rosaiah reiterated in the Council on Saturday that there was no need to panic as the government had taken sufficient steps to ensure adequate supply of stocks to all districts.

Admitting lapses in rushing fertilizer stocks on time to various districts due to rain and sudden rise in demand, Mr. Rosaiah said, there was no shortage and the situation was not as alarming as was made out to be.

To overcome transport problems, three senior Railway officials were positioned to monitor rake supply and one official assigned to every district to take all possible steps to ensure supply as per demand. “We are alert. Please cooperate with us and don’t create unnecessary panic,” he said.

Mr. Rosaiah said that government would procure buffer stocks for rabi, keeping the kharif experience in mind.

Contention

Earlier, initiating the discussion, P. Yagadagiri (TDP) alleged that so far only 23 lakh tonnes of fertilizer was supplied as against requirement of 69 lakh tonnes. He said Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy misled people by claiming that adequate stocks were available. “If it were so, why would farmers raid godowns?” he asked.

Puvvada Nageswara Rao (CPI) said the State received good rain even during the last four years but it was only this year that the farmers agitated about fertilizer shortage.

The government should verify about largescale hoarding and black-marketing taking place.
