Cattle feed plants have suffered heavy losses: Revanna BANGALORE: The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has urged the Government to allow it to purchase maize directly from farmers, in compliance with the support prices announced by the Government. It would help in bringing down the production cost of cattle feed substantially, it said. Federation chairman H.D. Revanna told presspersons here on Saturday that the KMF had sent a letter to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on August 4, and to the departments concerned on August 29 explaining the need to purchase maize directly from the farmers. The federation had four cattle feed plants with an overall monthly production of 25,400 tonnes. It also had to supply cattle feed to milk unions. Owing to spiralling prices, the federation had been incurring heavy losses. The cost of the raw materials required for producing cattle feed such as rice bran , rice polish, maize, cotton seed cake and sunflower cake had increased by 27 per cent against the 12.5 per cent rise in the selling price of cattle feed, he said. Mr. Revanna said that the federation’s cattle feed plants situated at Rajanukunte, Gubbi, Dharwad and Hassan had suffered a loss of Rs. 85.6 lakh, 10.75 lakh, Rs. 18.75 lakh and Rs. 49.43 lakh respectively. Regular revision of the selling price of cattle feed had become imperative due to the variations in the cost of raw materials, he added.
