Erode-Palani line survey to be over in 6 months
Karthik Madhavan
ERODE: Finally, there is some forward movement in the Erode-Palani railway line project. Tender for conducting the Final Location Survey has been awarded to Railway Vikas Nigam Limited.
The company is expected to finish the survey in six months, says S.K. Kharventhan, MP, Palani. The survey will be carried out at Rs. 78.64 lakh. He says in the survey the company will look into aspects such as on which farmers’ land will the line pass through, are there alternatives, the number of overbridges to be constructed, etc.
The Railway Ministry ordered the survey on May 12, 2008. The report will be submitted to the Railway Board.
The railway line between the textile town and the temple town will run for 91.05 km and is likely to have eight stops at Chennaimalai, Kangayam, Oothiyur, Nallimadam, Dharapuram, Aachiyur, Thoppampatti and Palani.
The total project cost has been estimated at Rs. 287.84 crore.
Mr. Kharventhan says the line will be of benefit to Erode, Chennaimalai and other textile towns.
“This was the only project of the 17 in the State that had a positive rate of return. The others were negative. The line will definitely bring in good revenue through goods movement.” Though the project is to connect Erode with Palani, the line will, however, be laid only between Ingur and Palani, as a link between Erode and Ingur exists.
